If you’re still playing gigs for exposure or a couple of hundred in cash in 2025, you’re not just selling yourself short. You’re setting your whole band up for burnout and bullshit.

STEP 1: KNOW YOUR MINIMUM (AND STICK TO IT)

Every band needs a hard floor, a minimum fee that makes it worth loading your gear, driving across town and pouring sweat onto the stage. If you don’t have one, then you’re already losing. Seriously, forget what the other bands are charging. That’s of no concern. Ask yourself “how much should my band charge?”, then set your own minimum gig fee and never apologise for it.

STEP 2: DON’T BE AFRAID TO WALK AWAY

Venues will try it on. Private clients might plead poverty. But your job is to say no to bad deals, and mean it. The bands who get paid what they’re worth are the ones who walk away from the bullshit. If your inbox is full of “but it’ll be great exposure!” then you’re fishing in the wrong pond.

STEP 3: CONTRACTS AREN’T OPTIONAL

Shout out the regulars and buy someone a pint for showing up three gigs in a row. Post photos of your crowd, so fans feel seen and appreciated.

GET OFF YOUR STAGE AND INTO THE ROOM

Social media’s great, but nothing builds loyalty like face-to-face. Don’t just break down your kit at the end of a gig and ignore everyone. Mingle, thank people for turning up and remember their names. That’s what turns casual attendees into lifelong fans and advocates.

GIVE THEM A REASON TO COME BACK

Switch up your setlists and drop new covers in on a fairly regular basis. Also consider running a “fan pick” song poll. You need to make every gig feel like a one-off, not just another night out.

YOU CAN’T FAKE THIS SHIT

Algorithms change and trends die, but real relationships with real people is what puts bums on seats and keeps your band in business. Building a fanbase that shows up isn’t about hacks or growth secrets. It’s about showing up as a crew that communicates with people, on stage, online and everywhere in between.

Your setlist isn’t just a list of songs. It’s your battle plan. It’s the difference between an audience that’s slouching in their seats and one that’s leaping around, losing their minds, buying you drinks and begging for more.

STOP PLAYING JUKEBOX HERO

You’re better than that. Too many bands treat their setlists like random playlists. That’s bullshit. “Yeah, let’s whack this one in here, maybe that one next, see how it goes…”

No. You are not a Spotify shuffle. You are not a human jukebox. You’re in that room to control the night and have everybody going absolutely mental.

OPEN WITH INTENT

Your first song is your war cry. If you start with a slow-burner, you’re already losing.

Front-load the bangers. The first three tracks should be absolute weapons. Grab their attention before the idea of a bar crawl does.

Mid-set is where the energy sags. Don’t let that happen. Drop a surprise. Maybe an unexpected cover or a mash-up, something that snaps people back to the stage.

READ THE ROOM, DON’T JUST READ THE LIST

You’re not playing to a bunch of fucking robots. Your setlist should flex. If the room’s buzzing, ramp it up. If they’re flagging, don’t be afraid to call out for audience energy and hit them with a crowd-pleaser.

And for the love of all that’s rock ‘n’ roll, do not default to the cliché of slowing things down a bit unless you mean it. If the room needs it and you sell it with confidence, then the room will absolutely lap it up. It can be magic.

But if you’re just filling space or apologising for a ballad, you’ll lose them. Read the energy, own your choices and bring the crowd with you. Control the rollercoaster.

MASTER THE FLOW

A killer setlist isn’t just about song choice. It’s about owning the flow of the evening. Here’s a few tips for you to get your chops into:

Key changes: Don’t make your singer jump from a low croon to a high screamer with no warning. It will be dogshit for the crowd.

Tempo: Don’t stack five slow tunes back-to-back unless you want the crowd to start texting their exes. Cos that bad breakup was way more bearable than what you’re offering.

Transitions: Nail your time between songs. Keep the dead air to a minimum, because the less time you spend tuning, clearing your throat and scratching your balls, the more time you spend owning the room.

Make every gig legendary. Stop treating the stage like it’s just some corner of the pub or a patch of sticky carpet. Own that bastard like it’s your battlefield.

MOVE AS ONE: UNLEASH THE BEAST

A great live band is never just a bunch of musicians playing songs. On stage, you’re one living, breathing beast, and when you’re able to feed off each other’s energy, that’s the secret of unforgettable band chemistry.

So, when your bassist throws in a filthy bass run, let it fire you up, and if the drummer’s pounding like a jackhammer, get over there and double down.

Because if you’re just a group of shitty, disconnected players staring at your shoes, you’ll never engage your audience. Want to know how to engage your audience? Move as a unit, attack as a unit, and the crowd will lock in with you. That’s the foundation of true gigging confidence.

OWN THE SPACE, NO MATTER THE SIZE

Small stage? It really doesn’t matter, because big energy always wins. The best cover bands know how to make every square inch count. If the venue is tight, every movement you make needs to hit twice as hard. Can’t move sideways? No worries, jump upwards. Use what you’ve got and make it look awesome.

Every band, no matter how slick or seasoned, ends up staring down the barrel of a dead room at some point. Let’s show you how to flip the switch and get the crowd energised.

1 – CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR

First off, you need to accept that the crowd isn’t always the problem. Sometimes you’re off your game, sometimes the sound is shit, sometimes the venue is just a bit crap. But your job is to fire up the flames, no matter what.

If you’re playing like you feel like you’re owed something, then the crowd will smell it. They’re not there to rescue you or simper, they’re in the place to be entertained. So, ditch the sulk, shake off the entitlement and get to work.

Don’t just stare out into the void and hope for a miracle. Watch what little energy there is. Are people chatting? Are they half-watching you? Are they ignoring you completely?

Adapt. If your opening salvo of bangers is bombing, it’s time to switch tactics.

• Abandon the setlist, just for a song or two. Pull out a tune you know always gets a big reaction, play it even if it might not be cool.

3 – DON’T BREAK THE ICE, SMASH IT TO PIECES

You want to jolt people out of their apathy? Talk to them. Not in a “So, who’s celebrating a birthday?” cruise ship way, but in your own voice. 6 – CAPTURE THE CHAOS WITH SOCIAL MEDIA FOR COVER BANDS

Even if the gig feels like a write-off, film a song or two. Sometimes, the weirdest, emptiest gigs produce the rawest, funniest moments. Share it with your followers and be honest, “we played to five people and a dog last night. Still tore it up”.

People love that shit. It shows you’re real and you’re in it for the music, not just the glory.

7 – DEBRIEF & MOVE ON (YOUR ESSENTIAL BAND SURVIVAL TIP)

After the gig, don’t let the mood fester. Have a quick, honest chat, think about:

• What worked?
• What tanked?
• What could you try next time?

Epic band photos are not about standing in line, staring at the lens like you’ve all just shit your shorts. If you look like you’re being held hostage at gunpoint, then you’re probably doing it wrong.

WHY YOUR BAND PHOTOS SUCK ASS & WHY IT MATTERS

If I see one more band photo shot against a knackered old brick wall, I’ll fucking lose it. First impressions count, and your band images are the frontline on your website, your press kit, your gig posters and every damn social media profile you run. If you want to get booked for gigs, build a powerful brand and stand out from every other cover band in town, then your photos need to look as wild and professional as your live show feels.

STYLE LIKE YOU MEAN IT

Stop overthinking your outfit and start thinking about your identity for your cover band photos. Are you a gritty indie band, a party-starting cover band or something in between? Dress like you actually play gigs, not like you’re off to a job interview or a shitty stag do for your dodgy cousin’s gypsy wedding. Wear what you rock on stage, the clothes you can move in and that scream your vibe. If you’re not sure, pick a lane and go bold, go dark or go energetic. And for the love of chaos, ditch the oversized clothing brand logos unless you’re getting paid to wear them.

NO MORE HUMAN LAMPPOSTS

The secret to all this shit is confidence. Don’t stand there like you’re waiting for detention. Move, lean and laugh. Get the front person actually up front, but don’t make the rest of the band look like they’ve been sentenced to the back row forever. Mess around with height, angles and attitude, and if you feel like an absolute bell-end, then you’re probably doing it right. Try action shots, crowd reactions or even a staged mid-gig meltdown. You want photos that look like your band sounds: full of energy, unpredictable and ready to blow the roof off.

STAY AWAY FROM THE BRICK WALLS

Find a spot that fits your vibe. Whether that’s gritty alleyways, neon-lit bars, rooftops and skylines, or even the sticky flea-infested floor of your favourite boozer. The best band photography locations tell a story and give your band images some actual personality. Oh yeah, and bonus points for weird props or catching the golden hour light. While we’re at it, always check the lighting, because dark and moody beats washed-out and boring every time.

DIY OR PRO PHOTOGRAPHER?

If you can afford a pro who actually understands music photography, do it. But if you’re broke, then grab a mate with a decent camera or phone and shoot a ton of stuff. Use natural light, experiment with angles and don’t be afraid to get weird. Most importantly, someone needs to take charge and direct this ship, otherwise you’ll end up with 100 blurry shots of you all blinking, confused and looking like someone took you hostage and is demanding a ransom.

EDIT LIKE A BAND THAT GIVES A SHIT

Don’t slap an Instagram filter on and call it done. Edit your band photos so you look sharp, not fucking radioactive. Crop for your website, socials and press kit, and make sure your images match your music branding. Consistency is king, so use the same style across your Facebook, Instagram and your EPK (that’s your electronic press kit) so people know it’s you, not just some random pricks with an instrument fetish.

USE YOUR PHOTOS LIKE A PRO

Look, you’ve put all the work in, now actually update your website, press kit, Facebook, Instagram and every gig poster with your new shots. Don’t let your killer new photos rot in a Google Drive folder. The right band image can get you more gigs, more fans and more respect, so just frigging use them everywhere already.

You’re not in this to scrape by on loose change and fistbumps. You’re the reason punters stick around and the bar tills keep ringing, so why let your tips be an afterthought? If you’re going to play, play to win. Let’s turn those half-hearted coins into some proper cash.

1. YOUR TIP JAR: MAKE IT UNMISSABLE & NOT EMBARRASSING

If your tip jar is an old pint glass or a battered guitar case, you’re not standing out, you’re blending into the pub wallpaper. Get a proper tip jar. Go bold – maybe it’s a kids potty with a neon label, a metal bucket, hell, even a toolbox if it fits your band vibe. Stick a sign on it that says “MORE TIPS = LOUDER, SWEATIER, BETTER SHOWS”

Seed it with a tenner before you start. Nobody wants to be the first, that’s tip psychology 101.

2. GO CASHLESS OR GO HOME

Nobody carries cash anymore. If you’re relying on coins, you’re stuck in 2019. Print a QR code for tipping through PayPal, Monzo or whatever the hell you use. Stick it on the jar, your mic stand, your forehead, but just make it visible. Oh yeah, and announce it:

“If you’re slick and cashless, scan the code and buy us a drink online!”

3. MAKE SONG REQUESTS A PAID PRIVILEGE

Stop letting punters shout requests at you for free. Have a core setlist of bangers that you actually want to play and charge for requests:

“You want Wonderwall? That’s a fiver, mate.”

No tip, no tune, it’s that simple, and that’s how to get paid for song requests.

4. PLANT THE IDEA EARLY & OFTEN

One of the best ways to get tips at gigs is don’t wait until the last song to mention tips. Drop it in between numbers:

“If you’re loving this, then show the tip jar some love as well. We take cash, card and questionable compliments.”

Keep it light, keep it cheeky, but make it clear that good music costs money.

5. TELL THEM WHAT THE MONEY’S FOR

If you’re still wondering how to ask for tips at gigs, then people tip more when there’s a story. Are you fundraising or saving for studio time? New gear? A tour? Tell them. Make it real:

“Every quid in the jar gets us closer to recording our next video, instead of eating beans on toast for the next week.”

6. SELL SOMETHING. ANYTHING.

Merch isn’t just for big name bands. Some of the best merch ideas for bands can be as easy as burning some CDs, printing a few t-shirts or just slapping your logo on a mug and sticking your merch table next to the tip jar.

“Grab a tee, drop a tip, keep us alive.”

If you can’t be arsed with merch, at least have download cards or stickers. Anything to get your name and your payment details out there.

7. WALK THE JAR & DON’T BE SHY

On your break, take the tip jar for a lap of the venue. Smile, chat, thank people. If you’re playing non-stop, get your mate or the world’s most charming band member to do it. It’s not begging, it’s business, and these tip jar strategies for musicians are what will keep your band alive in the shitty places that are paying you less than top dollar.

8. BUILD YOUR MAILING LIST WHILE THEY PAY

A great way to build a fanbase at gigs is to collect emails. Next to your tip jar, have an email sign-up sheet.

“Drop your email, get gig updates and we’ll send you a link to our latest tracks.”

As people tip, chat them up and get them on your mailing list, because that’s how future fans, future sales and future gigs get sorted.

9. CHARITY SPLIT, BUT ONLY IF IT’S REAL

If you’re working with a charity, shout about it.

“Tonight, half of all the tips go to [Charity Name].”

People open their wallets far wider when there’s a cause. But don’t fake it, because musicians who bullshit about charity are lower and grubbier than a pub carpet. Don’t be a shit stain.

10. DON’T BE A COWARD, JUST FUCKING ASK

The biggest tip killer? Not even asking. At the end of your set, say:

“We’re here hustling for tips tonight. If you had a good time, sling a few quid in the jar or scan the code. It keeps us on the road and off OnlyFans.”

Say thank you, loudly and often, because people remember bands who show gratitude.

Guitarists: Stop Noodling & Start Nailing

Guitarists, you’re the worst fuckers for doing this. Learn the solo, don’t just fake it. Practice your rhythm, your transitions and your pedalboard tap-dancing, because if you want your sound to punch through at gigs, you need to put the hours in. Don’t think about being good enough, go for absolutely batshit flawless.

Bass Players: Own the Groove

Bassists, your job is to glue the whole mess together. If your timing slips, then the whole band sounds like a car crash. Practice with a metronome, get your tone sorted and work on those fills, but never at the expense of the groove. The best cover bands have bass players who are absolute machines, so become one.

Drummers: Be the Engine, Not the Problem

Drummers, you set the pace. You control the energy. If you’re sloppy, the band is a frigging mess. Practice your timing, dynamics and fills. Nail those transitions. Bring spare sticks, tune your kit and always be ready for the unexpected. A disciplined drummer is the backbone of every legendary gig.

Vocalists, you’re not just there to look all pretty and scream out the chorus. Practice your pitch, your breath control and your stage presence. Don’t be the weak link or the embarrassment that’s holding the band back, be the spark.

Keyboard Players: Less is More, But Make It Count

Keys, you’re the extra sass that makes it all sizzle. Whether you’re filling out the sound or taking the lead, practice your parts, your patches and your transitions. Don’t overplay. Make every note count. The best cover bands have keyboardists who know when to shine and when to lay back and reinforce the rest of the band.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE

It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, a weekend warrior or a full-time pro, attention to detail is what separates the decent from the dangerous. Take notes during rehearsals, record your gigs and fix what’s sloppy. Whether you’re learning new songs, tightening up your harmonies or dialling in your pedalboard, the devil is in the details.

Guitarists: Write down tricky chord changes or solo licks.

Bassists: Note which songs need slap, pick or fingers.

Drummers: Mark fills, tempo changes and dynamic drops.

Vocalists: Scribble reminders for harmony lines or tricky lyrics.

Keys: Log patch changes and split points.

The best musicians, on any instrument, are the ones who stuck it out when everyone else packed it in. If you want to play fast, tight and confidently at live gigs, break everything down. Practice slowly, build up speed and don’t try to be a hero on day one.

PRACTICE LIKE YOUR NEXT GIG DEPENDS ON IT (BECAUSE IT DOES)

Practice and memorisation isn’t just for the lead guitarists and vocalists. Every band member needs to put in the hours:

Guitarists: Drill solos, chord changes and pedalboard routines.

Bassists: Groove with the drummer, lock in with the kick and own your tone.

Drummers: Practice with a click, work on fills and prep for the unexpected.

Vocalists: Warm up, nail your full range, memorise all the lyrics and rehearse your stage moves.

Keys: Practice patch changes, runs and layering sounds.

Whatever instrument or genre you play, set those goals and attack your weaknesses. Make practice the most important part of your week, because the cover bands that destroy live shows are the ones who treat practice like a gig, not an afterthought.

WHY HAND SIGNALS MATTER FOR COVER BANDS

Most cover bands don’t use enough signals and you can spot it from the back of the room. Bands shouting over the music, missing cues, or worse, bickering mid-song. You look tight. The crowd sees a band in total control, not a bunch of mates winging it.

You stay flexible. Stretch out a banger, cut a flop short or throw in an extra chorus, without having to say a word.

You avoid trainwrecks. No more missed endings, botched solos or shouting “one more time!” over the monitors.

You keep the vibe. Less talking, more playing, and you look like you’ve done this a thousand times.

Counting In: Finger in the air, count down or a tap on the headstock/drumstick. It sets the tempo and everyone drops in together.

Volume Up/Down: Palm up, lift for more; palm down, push for less. Clear as day, no confusion.

Wrap It Up/Last Chorus: Spinning finger in the air over your head or a fist up. Finish strong, no awkward fade-outs.

To the Top: Tap the top of your head means “back to the start.” Handy for those medleys or for when someone misses the cue, but you don’t want to be doing this a lot.

Bridge/Chorus/Verse: Point down (verse), point across or at your nose (bridge), two fingers up (chorus)—just agree what’s what in rehearsal.

Solo: Point at the player who’s up next. No guessing, no missed moments.

Fade Out: Flat palm, slow downward motion. Everyone drops volume together, seamless and pro.

Stop: Karate chop or fist down. End it clean, no stragglers.

Pro tip: Rehearse these and use them every time. The best bands have this so locked in that the crowd never even notices, it’s just a seamless, pro-level show.

HOW TO MAKE HAND SIGNALS WORK IN THE REAL WORLD

Agree on your signals. Don’t wait until you’re on stage to figure this shit out, because you need to nail it before you ever load into the venue.

Keep it consistent. If you change your signals every gig, you’ll end up with chaos and blank stares.

Use them every time. The more you use them, the more natural it feels and the tighter your band becomes. But don’t be a prick and use them when they’re not even necessary, because that’s just going to piss everyone off.

Don’t overcomplicate. You’re not the London Symphony Orchestra for fuck’s sake, so stick to what works.

Then, when you’re ready, take on bigger stages and let that fear morph into pure, unfiltered adrenaline. It’s all about building stage confidence, piece by piece.

BUILD A RITUAL THAT PUTS YOU IN THE ZONE

Pre-show routines for musicians aren’t just for the boring bastards. Find what works for you, whether it’s a euphoric playlist, a round of breathing exercises, a few minutes of shadowboxing, whatever. Anchor your mind so you’re not spiralling before you hit the stage.
